The Covenant that Delights

Towards the end of the Open Day on 12 October 1991, there took place a little ceremony that became, as I felt, lifted out of the ordinary into that realm from which "signs" are given.

The Manger-Altar, beautifully and lovingly restored in memory of Beatrice, had to be taken from the workshop up to the Barn Chapel. Its great weight, with more good Sussex oak added, required the help of a friendly farmer, with tractor and trailer, to transport it.

As all followed up the road, a hint of ancient words came to mind: "The ark of the covenant of the Lord went before them". What was formerly a real manger with food for animals has for over fifty years become a significant symbol for so many: Bethlehem, which in Hebrew means `House of Bread', with Cross above, and beyond, the beauty of the countryside, reminder of reverence for creation and joy of resurrection. Then, as we reflected together on this particular occasion, and for the first time in my memory, a small flock of sheep appeared in the field!

Was a contemporary "messenger of the covenant of the Lord, whom ye delight in" saying:

 

Hold fast to your original covenant: pray that Micklepage may always be -

A place of love and laughter, care and courage, hope and happiness;

A place of discovery, where "visitors" become "members one of another", within the community of the risen Lord, and with dedication to him renewed;

A place where the Fellowship of the Holy Spirit becomes reality, known and experienced, his plan and purpose revealed?
